4 reasons to move to Washington

03/07/2022

At Jill Moore Select Properties, we love Washington! We’ve always had an office here right in the heart of the village where we still meet eager buyers and sellers or property.

Many people may overlook Washington because the dual carriageways make it easy to simply pass through. But look a little closer, and you’ll see why Washington is the perfect place to buy your next home.

While it became a ‘new town’ in 1964 – which is part of the reason for the number of highways – there’s more to Washington than you might think.

Here are just four reasons to move to Washington!

The village

While Washington is a ‘new town’, it’s steeped in history. And the village captures a lot of that history.

The ‘jewel in the crown’ is Washington Old Hall. The Washington family (which was originally as Wessyngton) dates back to the 12th Century. But the Hall was built between 1732-1799 and was the home of the ancestors of George Washington, America’s first president.

The family gave its name to the capital city of America, Washington DC (District of Columbia). As a result of this connection, Washington Old Hall is a hit with visitors.

It sits right at the heart of the quaint village, which is a hidden gem with some fascinating 19th century buildings along with fantastic places to eat.

Fast forward to 2022, and the village is in the running for Britain in Bloom!

Places to visit

The village isn’t the only place to visit in Washington. In fact, there are a number of fascinating places for all the family on your doorstep. Here are just a few…

  •  Washington Wetland Centre. Managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, the site attracts interesting wildlife, including a family of short clawed otters and a flock of Chilean flamingos.
  •  ‘F’ Pit Museum. For 200 years, Washington, like the rest of the North East, was surrounded by coal mines. The ‘F’ Pit remembers the region’s coalmining heritage, where you’ll see the winding engine that took pitmen up and own to the coalface.
  •  North East Land, Sea and Air Museum. The museum is packed full of fascinating aircraft and vehicles, including the jaw-dropping Avro Vulcan. Housing the biggest range of aircraft in the region, it is also home to a military vehicle collection, a bus collection and a World War II street scene.
Washington also boasts some great restaurants, such as those at the picturesque river location at Fatfield.

Location

With so many dual carriageways, every area of Washington has quick connections to Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, the MetroCentre and beaches. Being in such a central position means you can also access the Durham Dales quickly as well as trunk roads such as the A19 and A1(M).

And if you want to stay closer to home, it has its own shopping centre, The Galleries and nearby retail park, which has a range of stores including M&S Food and Next.

Range of property

Washington boasts some stunning historic property, but it also has a range of modern and new-build homes to suit all tastes.

Whether you’re looking for an apartment or a stunning five-bedroom family home with double garage, Washington has something to suit everyone.
